Understanding Earwax and Earwax Impaction

Earwax is a natural protective coating for your ear canals. It has antibacterial and anti fungal properties. It helps to repel water and prevent ear infections. When earwax accumulates excessively, it can lead to earwax impaction, which may cause the following symptoms: Difficulty hearing; Ear pain; Ringing sensation in the ear; Sensation of a plugged or blocked ear Earwax impaction is more commonly observed in young children and older adults.

Can I Address Earwax Build-up at Home?

Yes, if you do not have a history of a perforated eardrum, ear tubes, or ear surgery. However, if any of the aforementioned conditions apply to you, it is important to schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider.

Methods to Remove Impacted Earwax

Here are some recommended strategies for removing earwax. These products can be easily obtained from your local pharmacy:

– Mineral oil, olive oil, or Cerumol ear drops: Tilt your head to the side, allowing the affected ear to face upward. Administer 3-4 drops of oil or Cerumol into the ear. Seal the ear with a cotton ball or tissue and leave it overnight. Repeat this process for 3-4 consecutive nights. Once the wax has softened, gently rinse the ear with warm shower water and tilt your head to facilitate drainage.

– Hydrogen Peroxide: Tilt your head to the side, with the affected ear facing upward. Using an ear dropper, apply a mixture of 3-4 drops of hydrogen peroxide and an equal amount of water into the ear. Wait for 15-30 minutes, then gently flush the ear with warm water using a bulb syringe. Note: Hydrogen peroxide can cause bleaching of the surrounding hair.

– Murine Ear Drops: Tilt your head to the side, with the affected ear facing upward. Apply 5 drops of Murine Ear Drops into the ear canal using the dropper. Wait for 5-10 minutes, then gently flush the ear with warm water using a bulb syringe. Repeat this process daily for 3-5 days.

What to Avoid

Under no circumstances should you use Q-tips or any other small objects to scratch the ear canal. Such actions can potentially push the wax further into the canal or damage the eardrum.
